#BLUELIVESMATTER?

Sheriff Lombardo reported that 60% of police officers have voluntarily chosen NOT to take the COVID-19 vaccination available to all FRONTLINE workers. Since when are police officers NOT on the front lines? During a time when the vaccination is our best possible option for slowing the spread of a deadly virus that has ravaged black and brown communities across the world, we must demand better of our leaders and the police.

COVID-19 has ravaged our communities with illness, long-term health effects, death, evictions, job loss and economic disaster. It is rampant in our jails and prisons. When people think of frontline workers the first group that comes to mind is police. Arresting officers could be spreading the virus in our communities—the same ones they are sworn to protect and serve. Perhaps, Sheriff Lombardo doesn’t believe that #blueslivesmatter. We can see from the racism pervasive in the criminal justice system that blacks lives certainly don’t. It is unconscionable that officers who respond are not required to be vaccinated. It is this same lack of leadership that demonstrates we need police reform.

We MUST stand up against this egregious oversight on behalf of our families and communities. We MUST do everything to #stopthespread of coronavirus. We MUST demand that officers be vaccinated. It looks like we won’t be able to rely on Sheriff Lombardo to do it, so we MUST save ourselves.
