This Week’s Legislative Summary

The 360 Legislative Summary – Week of June 6th

The end of Nevada’s 81st Legislative Session, Sine Die, was Monday, May 31, 2021. In the final hours of the session there were quite a few things that passed and will, hopefully, be signed into law by Governor Sisolak.  On the show we also spoke with Assembly Speaker of the House Jason Frierson, from Assembly District 8 about some accomplishments and what’s next for passed legislation. This was also the FINAL IG LIVE episode of The 360 until the next legislative session is called to discuss disbursing the American Recovery Plan federal funding as well as redistricting, the reapportionment of political districts based on the results of the US Census. The 360 newsletter will still go out weekly with up-to-date information about the Interim Session and the regulatory process to follow these laws into implementation and evaluation of their success at implementing the legislative intent. If you haven’t signed up, please do so on our website www.mpower360.org

BILLS DISCUSSED on The 360 Legislative RoundUp for the week of June 6th

We talked about bills that passed the legislature but may or may not have been signed into law. Below is a list of bills that were signed this week by the Governor. We will continue to update these bills each week in The 360 newsletter.

On Sunday, June 6, 2021, Governor Sisolak signed 4 LGBTQ bills into law...

SB 275 - HIV Modernization

SB 109 - SOGIE Data Collection – Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression

SB 237 - Recognition of LGBTQ Owned Businesses by the Secretary of State

SB325 - Allows Pharmacists to prescribe HIV prevention medication and ancillary services without a prescription

Happy Pride Month! What an accomplishment for Nevada and the great advocacy of our LGBTQ+ current and former legislatures.

The bills we selected to include on “The 360” Legislative RoundUp are bills that have significant implications for communities of color. Many of the bills introduced during the legislative session impact communities of color and it is important to follow the process on bills that may have profound direct or unintended consequences for communities of color. Key issues like healthcare access, criminal justice, reproductive justice or economic issues tend to have dire impacts on specific groups. Our intent is to make the community aware of these bills so they can follow them and advocate for or against them during the session and also complete the process by measuring their impact and effectiveness after implementation. Moving the needle for racial justice is imperative since our legislature only meets once every two years for 120 days. Everything in the previous and following biennium needs to be legislated. If the community is not involved in the process, it takes two years to change anything that was passed. Make you voice heard today.
